From 13th-16th July, the largest anthropology conference ever held in Hong Kong, 'East Asian Anthropology/Anthropology in East Asia', was held in New Asia College. The conference was jointly sponsored by the Society for East Asian Anthropology of the American Anthropological Association, the Department of Anthropology of CUHK, and the Hong Kong Anthropological Society.
The majority of the event's 200 participants came from outside Hong Kong: the US, Western Europe, Japan, mainland China, Taiwan, Korea, Vietnam, and India. The conference brought together anthropologists from Eastern and Western societies, from the developing and developed worlds, to discuss what the role of anthropology should be in the world today. It created a unique opportunity for East Asian anthropologists and anthropologists of East Asia to discuss interesting social and cultural phenomena and to learn about recent research in their areas.
