The University hosted a full-day programme on 15 September to celebrate the 90th birthday of Prof. Yang Chen-ning, renowned Nobel laureate in physics, and currently Distinguished Professor-at-Large and director of the Institute of Theoretical Physics, CUHK.

The celebrations began with a popular science talk ‘The Higgs Boson and Yang–Mills Theory’ delivered by Prof. Kenneth Young from the Department of Physics. Professor Young’s talks was followed by a symposium featuring Prof. Jason Ho, Prof. Xia Keqing, Prof. Chu Ming-chung and Prof. Liu Renbao, each highlighted from different perspectives the academic achievements of Professor Yang, and his impact on scientific research and development.

At the birthday banquet, Prof. Joseph J.Y. Sung, Vice-Chancellor of CUHK, said the University has benefitted significantly from Professor Yang’s counsel and academic leadership. Since 2000, over 209 undergraduate students and 15 postgraduate students were awarded the CN Yang Scholarships. Professor Yang generously donated his medals, papers, manuscripts, photographs and audio-visual files to the University to establish the CN Yang Archive. Collection consists of 22,000 items, can be browsed online.
